Grace Forces Absolute Scepticism Through the Light of Truth in Life
Wonder wide ye who know how dear you are to God, for wonderment is not merely a sentiment; it is the sword that cuts through the thickest of idolatries. To wonder is to stand in awe before the vastness of creation, to recognise that even in its complexity and mystery, there is something far greater than ourselves, with a purpose and plan for us. Yet this wonder is only possible for the soul reflective of Christ’s Grace: when we have been humbled by the realisation that we are not the authors of our own truths, but recipients of divine revelation, as discoverers in our own imperfections of this mortal life.
Consider this with clarity: scepticism is not the enemy of truth; it is a great companion. Scepticism is the friend people wish to bring along because he is always the designated driver, and is unafraid to call out nonsense in any situation, reliable yet irreverent. To doubt is to question, and to question is to seek. In a world where ideas have become idols, scepticism is also a dangerous ally with many enemies. He is dangerous because people attach themselves to nonsense and do not like to hear the truth. The only way to embrace truth is to allow ourselves to question everything in our lives, especially our own assumptions about ourselves, and in doing so, to find the light that reveals what has always been there.
This brings us back to the heart of our discourse here: Grace is no passive state; it is active in our lives compelling the mind towards grander wonderment and then tentative understanding. Question: what is all research founded upon? Experimentation. Trial, right, of course, science from the structured discursive in experimental frameworks. However, in said trials we call experiment, we study error and success. This study of error and success is pretty identical with the personal process of understanding our sins and repenting from them. For what is Grace if not the divine Love that moves us to seek, to question, and to understand? It is rejection of all other certainty, save one: God’s plan is real and active, with a Love for us which is ultimately undeniable. It is in this singular certainty we find the most profound truths of all: that the universe is ordered by God’s Will, that truth is not found in our own minds as isolated, but in the great heaping complex of divine order that binds us to our path.
Imagine a world where every question is answered immediately, where no one ever doubts anything. How would such a world look? It would be a place devoid of wonder or discovery, a prison of certainty in all things where the soul is trapped in an unending stasis. For what is the truth of anything if not realised by questioning the myriad of lies? What is Grace if not the divine Love that permits us to ask those questions in the first place, and to arrive at truth? So it is that truth, and true scepticism, is only derived from the allowances granted us by God. This points to the deeper mystery that the only absolute that can withstand the weight of this scepticism is God’s Love. Even as we question, we are still bound by the laws of nature, the order of creation, and the unchanging Will of God. In this order, we find the most profound evidence of divine truth, not in our own ideas, but in the very foundations of existence itself.
Let us then ask ourselves: are we so enamoured with our own ideas that we have forgotten the wonder that comes from questioning them? Or are we simply trapped in a cycle of idolatry, never seeing the Grace that compels us to seek truth through a willingness to reject lies? The final embrace of truth is Grace forcing deep scepticism of all material things, derived from the light of divine Love, with a bias toward life and God’s plan through it. From this we may understand the highest order of meaning in our existence. We are not meant to live in certainty of anything outside of God’s Love; we are meant to find wonderment in that Love, which encourages us to question everything else and extend our ability to reflect that Love. In the light of this wonderment, we are permitted discovery of all other truths. This enables us to be most sceptical of all things which work against life: this is the sword to cut down all which works against flourishing community and strong societies with tightly bonded families carrying God’s plans forward. This is the Christian philosophical underpinnings of a godly and more truthfully honest science, as biased towards life.
We never had “science,” or anything approaching science, until we began to understand the restorative power of Grace, and the higher expectations which lead us to truth.
