Replication and Reinforcement
Recognitions in virtues are inherently cyclical and dynamic in nature. There is a continuous process of recognition and response, intertwined with both grace and intentional effort; encompassing the present moment (which reflects the past experience of God’s love) and extending into the future (the love that we actively choose to give to others). This process involves perseverance and thoughtful analysis grounded in honesty. Structural Virtues Theory (SVT) does not describe virtues development as a simple linear progression with a clear beginning and end, but rather as a spiral that features constant new beginnings: an ongoing journey that repeats, reinforces, and deepens itself, ultimately elevating our character, our thoughts, and the actions we take in everyday life.
The forgiveness found in magnanimity blossoms from a deep awareness and genuine honesty. This kind of forgiveness opens our hearts and minds to our greater purpose, which is rooted in God’s love and the overarching divine plan meant for us. Even as we continually strive to cultivate virtues in our lives, we come to recognise our profound dependence on grace. To forgive honestly is to humbly admit our own need for redemption and healing. To carefully analyse our mistakes is to actively and sincerely acknowledge our human fallibility. And to exercise perseverance in the face of challenges is to wholeheartedly embrace and accept our own limitations as part of the journey.
We embrace the cyclical journey not as some burden or obstacle, but as a profound blessing and a sacred necessity for growth. SVT represents far more than just a philosophical framework; it serves as a meaningful guide that helps us navigate the intricate labyrinth of our unique strengths, both within ourselves as individuals and within the broader context of our communal purpose. This journey has the potential to lead us ever closer to fully understanding and aligning with God’s divine plan for our lives. Through this process, we discover meaningful answers to the deepest questions we face and find the inspiration needed to live out our most fulfilling path in life.
