Resistance to Dishonour of Ignorant Insults Through Humility
What is humility if not the recognition that we are a part of a whole? Our worth is not measured by the approval of others, but by the integrity of our own soul. To show the other cheek is to embrace this truth in its purest form. It is to reject the temptation to retaliate with violence, and instead choose forgiveness over vengeance, grace over hatred, and truth over lies. This act is not a concession of anything but the most ignorant part of the self, and a triumph as victory over the hubris of deception. Remember the majority of your enemies are thus through ignorance.
In showing the other cheek, we are not merely acting out a moral principle; we are embodying the very essence of Magnanimity, the first virtue of all. Magnanimity is not about grandeur or superiority; it is about the ability to rise above petty grievances and see the larger picture with a greater perspective, in awareness and honesty. It is the courage to choose dignity in the face of insult, to recognise that our true worth has nothing to do with physical power or dominance over others, but in our capacity to love, forgive, keep growing, and allow others to grow as well.
To show the other cheek is to be honest with oneself and with the world. It is to admit to humility and fallibility while demonstrating the higher morality; actual honour worthy of respect which is not insulted over simple insults from ignorance. Honour has most to do with truth that appearance of ostensible dishonour is not the true reflection of our character, but of the insulting party’s own. In forgiveness and demonstration of honour, we cultivate the other virtues. It is the ability to endure without bitterness, to hold back the urge to strike back, and to see the deeper purpose behind the insult. When an honourable person is finally forced to take up arms, others of honour more readily come to their aid and with greater zeal.
